There is an article in today's (January 9, 2008) Oak Ridger about the Skyway Drive-In. It may bring back fond memories for those of you who grew up in Oak Ridge during the years the Skyway was in business.

I went to the Skyway in my pajamas and I went my Senior Year. In a way I grew up at the place. We went to every Horror-rama, which were once a month and usually included three movies. We I way a young kid my Dad would take us to the Horror-rama. I remember seeing a naked woman and discussing breast size with my Dad making fun of a lady's little limes. My Dad did not care what the movies were. One time we went when it was cold and damp and saw the best movie ever made Un Chien Andalou, which is Dali's first movie. Somehow I learned to appreciate my Dad's diverse sense of taste and fun. Of course, when I got to drive me and my buds would go to the Horror-rama. We would also go for Kung-Fu movies. We liked honking the horn when something just flat out unbelievable occurred. I did take a few dates to the Drive-in. That was always fun. Once I took a girl to a James Bond festival and it started to snow. The Skyway was a great place.
I like Drive-ins so much, I took my son to the Drive-in when there were Drive-ins in the San Francisco Bay Area. We used to go to the Drive-in on the last day of school. The loss of the Drive-in is a true cultural loss.

Is it just me or was this article very poorly written? I did not get the sense the author ever, EVER was a Skyway patron.

What a shame.

Yeah - I agree. It reads like it was written from a Wikipedia article.

I worked at the union 76 gas station next to the Holiday Inn that was next door to the drive-in . You could stand on the 2nd floor walk way and see the movie great but did not have sound. Anyway I would drive over there and Roy the owner or his wife would be working the gate and let me in to go to the concession stand to get hot dogs and fries for the guys working at the station.
I got to know the guy that worked the projection booth Overdale was his name a big man. He was the one that always said at the end of the night
"Hang the speakers on the post and the exit is to the right"
I remember Roy bitching every now and then about someone driving off with the speaker still in the window and ripping it off the post.

I recently bought an old postcard on eBay that was of the Holiday Inn but had the Skyway in the background. Those old cards like that are hard to come by.

I remember going to the drivin with a carload of kids and when my cousins were in town. They alway had a double feature. I miss going to a drivin movie.
